3 ways to prep for your next big race with Search
Google says running-related searches are spiking as people look to unplug and get outdoors, with queries like "run club," "how to choose running shoes," and "how to train for a marathon" reaching all-time highs this year. The company frames race preparation as requiring grit, strength, and a surprising amount of organization, and presents Search's AI features as a way to make that planning easier.
First, Search can help users create a training plan tailored to them and their neighborhood. In AI Mode, users can select the Canvas tool from the plus (+) menu and ask it to build a schedule that recommends cross-training and strength-building strategies, while also surfacing perspectives from sites and creators across the web. Google gives an example prompt asking for a sub-4.5-hour training plan for the Texas Marathon with different routes around Montrose, based on currently running four times a week with a longest run of 7-9 miles.
Second, Search can support running motivation through custom playlists. The post notes that mental endurance matters as much as physical endurance for longer distances, and that coping with boredom and staying energized on long runs is crucial. If users connect their YouTube Music account with Search, they can ask AI Mode to create a custom playlist for their run and listen to favorite artists on the go.
Third, Search can help runners find the right gear. Google says narrowing down shoes and running equipment can be difficult, but Search can address constraints such as road shoes for wide feet, lightweight hydration vests under $80, or anti-chafing apparel. Using Google's Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion product listings, Search can show tailored recommendations, side-by-side comparisons of in-stock options, and local availability to help runners find what they need.
