AI Generated 3D Models Flood Market, but Almost No One Is Buying Them

CGTrader, an online marketplace for 3D assets, found that one in six models uploaded to the site is now AI generated, yet AI-generated assets account for just $1 out of every $90 in revenue. The company says the gap between surging supply and middling demand "undercuts the assumption that AI-made content is repricing the market," with buyers clearly "voting with their wallets." Buyers told CGTrader that quality was the number one factor in their purchasing decisions, even more than price, and that AI-generated models simply aren't as good as human-made ones — particularly for 3D printing, where a bad model could break or fail to print correctly.

The findings come from marketplace data collected between June 2025 and May 2026 plus surveys of buyers. Only 4 percent of buyers seeking models for 3D printing said AI "works well," while 20 percent of buyers who purchased AI-generated assets found them not good enough, and 7 percent said they required heavy editing. Just 5 percent of all buyers said AI-generated assets worked well without modification. 3D artist Alexander Spivak, who sells on CGTrader, explained that while he's not against AI, he hasn't found a way to collaborate with it seamlessly because the creative process itself is what he enjoys, and integrating AI has not preserved that.

CGTrader's report arrives months after the company announced a partnership with Tencent on an AI-powered 3D model creation workflow. CEO Dalia Lašaitė said the workflow doesn't just generate assets from scratch; designers can use it to refine topology and textures, segment parts, create variations, and prepare models for production. "AI can accelerate the more mechanical parts of the process, while the designer retains creative direction," she said, adding that the revenue gap raises a question the industry has been avoiding: "an AI model may be cheaper to produce, but what is it actually worth?"
