Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads

BroadcomVMwareVDDKmigration

The VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) is a library that many migration tools rely on to move workloads off vSphere, including Microsoft Azure Migrate, Red Hat's Migration Toolkit, Nutanix Move, virt-v2v, and nbdkit. Broadcom has now pulled the publicly accessible download pages, and affected customers report that support says VDDK is no longer available for general use or download.

There has been no formal announcement, deprecation notice, or replacement tool. Instead, over the past few days, migration vendors and customers have seen previously valid download links suddenly return 404 errors. ShapeBlue documented the change as of August 25, 2026, after finding broken VDDK links in VMware-to-KVM migration documentation and testing numerous version-specific URL paths for VDDK 8 and 9.

This development makes it harder for VMware customers to migrate to other platforms, effectively adding a roadblock to an exit path already complicated by Broadcom's post-acquisition changes. The lack of an official explanation leaves migration vendors and customers without a clear way forward, and the broader ecosystem is watching to see whether this becomes permanent.
