A Claude Code skill that recovers export-blocked Kindle highlights
The skill, published as part of the l3a0/claude-plugins plugin marketplace, addresses Amazon's undocumented limit on Kindle notebook exports. When exporting a heavily-highlighted book, some highlights come back cut off mid-sentence or as bare location numbers under the notice: "Some highlights have been hidden or truncated due to export limits." This skill recovers them by extracting every highlight from read.amazon.com/notebook into a single verbatim, location-cited Markdown file, and recovering the blocked ones from the Mac Kindle app's synced annotation positions plus the Cloud Reader's rendered pages.
The skill was proven on four real books: 2,432 highlights extracted, of which 815 were export-blocked (454 truncated and 361 fully hidden) — and all 815 were recovered, with recovered text landing within a couple of characters of the Kindle app's own position ruler (median residual 0–1). The build story, including why the export limit exists and the three unlocks that beat it, is written up in "How to Take Back Your Kindle Highlights" on Substack.
The scope is limited to exporting your own highlights from your own Amazon account by driving your logged-in browser session and reading files from the Mac Kindle app. Output is for personal notes only since book text is copyrighted. The pipeline is macOS-only three times over: browser control uses AppleScript, OCR uses Apple's Vision framework, and highlight positions come from the Mac Kindle app's data files. It requires Claude Desktop with the Control Chrome extension, Chrome signed into Amazon with "Allow JavaScript from Apple Events" enabled, and the current Mac Kindle app (bundle id com.amazon.Lassen).
