Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle

ApteraLaunch Designsolar electric vehiclemanufacturing partnership

On August 20, Aptera announced a $44 million partnership with Launch Design to design and build its first solar electric vehicle. The arrangement is structured as a win-win: Launch becomes an early investor in Aptera, Aptera gains a partner with access to volume discounts and mass production facilities, and Launch is incentivized by owning Aptera stock warrants.

The deal addresses key open questions in Aptera's launch plans. Instead of burning through millions like Lucid and Rivian to build thousands of vehicles, Aptera can use Launch's existing large facilities, which will ship finished sub-assemblies to Carlsbad for final assembly and validation. This lets Carlsbad serve as an assembly point for large sub-assemblies, removing the need for long assembly lines or huge component warehouses.

It also helps Aptera control costs: Launch's size and international supply chain can negotiate lower prices than Aptera could on its own, supporting Aptera's target price points. The deal positions Aptera to scale production without the heavy capital investment typical of EV startups.
