Coop – Isolated VM Environments for Running Claude Code and Codex

coopVM isolationClaude CodeCodex

Coop is a Rust CLI designed to run Claude Code and Codex in isolated virtual machines, protecting the host while giving agents unrestricted access to Docker, git, compilers, and package managers. Each VM is disposable, reproducible, and cheap to create and destroy. The name is pronounced like the chicken coop (/kuːp/), not “co-op.”

Installation is done via a curl script or by building from source with Cargo. After installation, users run `coop setup` to build the VM template image. On Linux, setup installs Firecracker and fetches a guest kernel; on macOS, Lima must be installed first via `brew install lima`. Coop is tested on macOS arm64 (Apple Silicon) and Linux x86_64, while Linux arm64 builds are available but untested. The `coop update` command keeps the tool current.

Usage is straightforward: inside a project directory, run `coop up` to start an instance, then launch `coop claude` or `coop codex` to connect an agent CLI. The project’s documentation covers command references, configuration, images and profiles, workspace sync, Claude Code and Codex integration, editor integration, multi-instance support, platform backends, shell completion, and the architecture and trust model, along with contribution and security policies.
