Gemini becomes Google's fastest-growing product ever as it hits 1B users
Google has been all-in on Gemini for several years, and despite online hostility, the bet is paying off. CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users (MAUs), a milestone only 13 other Google products have achieved, but Gemini reached it faster than any of them. Gemini is now embedded across Google's ecosystem, powering email organization in Gmail, document summarization in Drive, and increasingly central to Search via AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Pichai's 1 billion figure specifically counts only people who open the Gemini app or visit the web interface to enter a prompt or use Gemini Live — not users encountering Gemini through integrations. Josh Woodward, Google's VP overseeing Gemini, added usage details: 63% of active users rely on voice input, with a growing number being voice-only; 20% of Gemini Live users share their camera feeds or screens for help; and 38% of school-related requests include an attachment, prompting Google to release new study tools in the coming weeks. Additionally, those billion users generate 150 million images per day using Nano Banana, all watermarked with SynthID.
These figures reveal how Gemini is becoming a daily utility, especially for voice-first interaction and AI-generated imagery. The heavy school use and attachment sharing suggest a pivot toward educational features, while SynthID watermarking may not fully address future concerns about content authenticity.
